We believe poetry transforms us, both in the reading and in the writing. We want to see your previously-unpublished poems about altered states! By altered states, we do not specifically mean drug-induced experiences—though we’d love to see some poems on that topic—but rather the numinous experience of a changed consciousness.
When picking your poems to send us, consider the following from Jane Hirshfield:
"One breath taken completely; one poem, fully written, fully read--in such a moment, anything can happen. The pressed oil of words can blaze up into music, into image, into the heart and mind's knowledge. The lit and shadowed places within us can be warmed."
To submit to En•Trance, please send three previously-unpublished poems in a Word doc, the entire submission being no more than six pages.
The submissions should be single-spaced, in a readable serif font like Times New Roman, with one-inch margins, and page breaks between poems.
Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please notify us immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere.
We prefer shorter poems—no more than 40 lines—but are open to seeing longer ones.
We are looking for diverse voices and styles but prioritize poems with strong imagery, technical skill, insight, and a touch of the unearthly.
We are not afraid of difficult content.
Please note, experimental formats are difficult to publish online. We will consider them, but they present technical difficulties with web software that may not be easily resolved.
Submissions are free, but we cannot pay for poems published at this time.
By submitting the author agrees, upon publication, to grant En•Trance Journal First North American Serial Rights. All rights revert to the author upon publication. Author also agrees to acknowledge En•Trance Journal as the original publisher in any subsequent publication of the work."
